I applied the light walnut stain to a 25 year old deck. After sanding and stripping old stain I used a brightener and gave deck 2 coats. I’m very pleased with the color. The wood grain shows through beautifully and it has a very nice sheen. Water beads up very well and it dries off 7without any spots. I gave it 4 stars because it has only been 2 weeks. I’ll try to update review , especially after the winter. I will say it looks better than any other stain I've ever used. The service in getting samples was fantastic and the online order was unbelievably fast. I’m very impressed.
This product worked great - better than expected. Will only stain with Defy Extreme from now on. Made my old worn out deck looks great again. Easy to use and clean up.
The stain was very easy to use. So far, after one month, it still looks good. Be sure to prep your deck well. Brush is better than roller for coverage. The stain blended with the old pecan colored stain very well.
I easily got stain sample directly from Defy however I bought an oil based water cleanup product from a chain home improvement store for the convenience. Unfortunately, the Cabot went on splotchy and was very opaque even though it was a semi-transparent formula. Also, the color was not a good match from the in-store tinting. I ended up not using it and went with the Defy. It went on the way I expected stain to. I am very happy with the result. I was staining new deck rails and pickets and a picnic table.
I did a fair amount of research on stains before buying this, then tested one gallon for almost a year before doing the whole house. It seems to harden over a month or two, coming to a deep lustrous finish when fully cured. Although a little expensive per gallon, it seemed to cover twice as much as my painters expected it to. Great product!
Easy application, good results, but doesn't cling to wood putty.
Kevin Miller at DTEP was an excellent source of information and guidance. The DEFY wood cleaner helped strip the surface of the older part of the fence particularly the weathered graying. I also used the DEFY wood brightener to prepare the fence for the DEFY extreme wood stain. Some of the solution of the wood cleaner and brightener got on the house but did not affect the color of the house. On some parts of the fence, I used a combination of the clear and light walnut stains, and it provided a very clean and natural finish. I have never used the DEFY products before, but am very pleased by the appearance and am hopeful that it will remain as such for several years.
