Had my deck stained with DEFY after cleaning and brightening with DEFY products. Deck looks great. Water beads right up. I like that it's water based and I think the maintenance will be much easier. I'm very happy we decided to use DEFY products. Shipping was free and very fast.
I don't normally write reviews, but this product is an exception and I wanted to at least let others know of my experience. I have a large cedar deck and every year I would have to spend 2 weeks stripping, brightening, and then staining the deck. Not much fun. It's like spending your vacation time taking care of the deck. It was an incredible amount of work and time, and to be honest... I'm just getting too old for this. So I began to research for a better product, and after MUCH research, I found Defy. Actually, what I found was a DIY who had tested multiple products on his dock and then left the wood to the elements for a year. In the end the winner was....DEFY. So I decided to try it. What I like is that once I did a final stripping of the deck, I never have to strip again! This is the third year I have applied the product, and I just simply power wash the deck and then paint on the Defy. We do have some harsh winters here in Washington, and combined with the marine air there can be a lot of breakdown in a deck finish. Defy lasts the entire year, then I merely paint it on and I'm good for another 365 days. It's so worth the money, especially considering the time and effort it saves me. I highly recommend this product and I have already recommended this to my friends with cedar decks!
I cleaned my cedar plank deck with 1 cup of chlorine and one cup of TSP mixed in 2 gals of water and used a deck scrub brush to loosen and clean the accumulation of dirt that had settle in. Boy was it filthy. Looked almost new when done. I waited about a week for it to really dry good and sanded a few areas with #60 sandpaper. I swept away the dirt from sanding and then proceeded to stain the boards using a sponge type application tool that looked like a floor cleaner I purchased at Lowe's. The applicator had some drawbacks but was a whole lot better than using a roller or brush! The Defy stain applied beautifully and the cedar wicked it up fast. I put the second coat on about a half hour later and wow, it looks awesome. The first rains came shortly afterwards and the water beaded up nicely showing me the Defy is working. This is the second time using Defy and the first time using the Extreme. The first coating lasted about 3 years- far longer than any other National brands I had used before. I am now proud of my deck once again!. And thanks to the folks at DTEPStore for the fast shipping and helpful advice!
Used the stain stripper and then brightener on a cedar deck previously stained with oil-based brand. Then stained with cedar tone. It doesn't look new, but it looks 10x better, and the stain penetrated much better and more uniformly than the previous version. It's only been a week, so we'll see how it does over the summer in this high desert climate (big UV). 4 stars only because I can't yet rate longevity.
We were a little concerned after the first coat, the surface of our fence barely had any color change. After applying the second coat we got the nice deep Cedar color we were expecting. It's good stain, splashed some on my legs and had to wait for it to wear off, just wouldn't scrub off. If it sticks to the fence half as well we'll be happy.
We just used this on our old deck, and it has transformed our wood into beautiful transparent wood cedar color. What a difference!! It is very thin, and soaks into the wood like a sponge, so we are glad we bought the 5 gallon size. I hope it keeps the deck looking like new for many years. It is so nice to see the wood grain pop out again! The only thing it did not do is take care of the splinters, so we will have to do some sanding. But it was so easy to apply using the brush method described in the video.
